The Importance of Writing Awards

The commission recognizes outstanding contributions to the support of teaching and writing in the United States, and has presented awards to Tom Brokaw, Warren Buffett, Sen. Robert Byrd and Sen. Thad Cochran. In 2009, the commission created the Ted Kennedy Award to honor those who, through their writing, embody the work of the late great senator from Massachusetts. The first award was given to Theodore "Ted" Sorensen.
