Timeline

This timeline details the planned dates for the AP® Program to provide information and resources, including sample exam questions and professional development opportunities, to all groups impacted by the upcoming changes to the AP courses and exams. This timeline also provides guidance to teachers on recommended actions they can take to prepare for the 2011–12 academic year and the implementation of the revised AP French Language and Culture, AP German Language and Culture, and AP World History courses. Specific details are available for activities approaching sooner, while the information on the later phases of the project is more general. As more activities are planned, the details will be provided on this timeline, including the titles of the professional development workshops and details regarding how to access those workshops and other resources. Additionally, sample exam questions will be made available to teachers in a complete practice exam form and the timing of this will likewise be detailed on the timeline below. Please be aware that the dates in this timeline are subject to change.

Recommended Action for Teachers

  • Read the relevant pages and curriculum framework for any AP subjects you teach.
  • Send any questions you have about the revised curriculum, exam or timeline
    for the changes to the AP Program, via Contact Us.
  • Make an appointment with your department chair or principal to discuss the upcoming changes:
    • Print any details from the website needed for your conversation, such as course information, exam information, curriculum framework, timeline, resources and professional development.
    • Identify resources or support you believe you will need to prepare for the 2011–12 academic year.
  • Meet with your Vertical Team to discuss the implications of the revised curriculum and resources you might need to prepare for the launch of the revised courses.
  • The College Board AP Vertical Team workshops for World Languages and Cultures, and History and Social Sciences have been updated to align with the revised curriculum.

  • Make an appointment with your department chair or principal to discuss the upcoming changes:
  • Consider classroom instructional strategies, throughout this academic year, that encourage the pedagogical changes required for the revised AP course for next year.
  • Consider professional development needs you may have about the pedagogical implications for teaching the revised curriculum.
  • Meet with your AP Vertical Team to continue efforts to vertically align the district's curriculum for your subject area:
    • Begin to spiral skill building into courses to prepare students for future enrollment in AP, thereby ensuring that all students can have equitable access to AP.
  • Read the curriculum framework for any AP science subjects you teach.
  • Review updates about planned changes to the AP science courses.

  • Resources to support teachers in developing their syllabus become available at the AP Course Audit site in February.  
  • AP Summer Institutes registration information available on AP Central®, starting Jan. 15, 2011.

  • Make an appointment with your department chair or principal to discuss the upcoming changes:
    • Review the AP Course Audit process you will need to complete to ensure that your AP course is authorized for the 2011–12 academic year.
    • Review the professional development workshop schedule and determine what professional development needs you have prior to the launch of the changes in the 2011–12 academic year, if any.
  • Review the AP Course Audit materials for your course and begin developing your syllabus.
  • Submit your AP Course Audit materials by June 1, 2011, to ensure inclusion in the initial November 2011 AP Course Ledger.

  • Five-day AP Summer Institutes for AP French, AP German and AP World History are aligned with the revised 2011–12 courses and exams.
  • AP French, AP German and AP World History professional development workshop registration available on AP Central beginning Aug. 1, 2011. Workshops will focus on pedagogy.
  • Launch of a full practice exam for each course and exam changing in the 2011–12 academic year.

  • Review the AP Course Audit materials for your course and begin developing your syllabus.
  • Ensure your plans for the 2011–12 academic year reflect the revised course and exam for AP French, AP German or AP World History.
  • Review the practice exam and compare to questions on the current AP Exam. Consider how these different types of questions will support more effective and deep teaching and learning.
