At this time, there are no specific actions that AP® Coordinators or counselors need to take to support these changes. This site is dedicated to helping you support your schools and understand the developments in specific AP courses. AP Coordinators and counselors should be advised that:
The revised course curricula are available on the subject-specific pages. This documentation details the organization of the course content and articulates the knowledge and skills that will be assessed on the AP Exam.
Visit the timeline to learn when additional course and exam information will be available and what actions you or your teachers need to take and when.
Exam lengths will be similar to that of current exams.
Teachers will be required to participate in some form of the course audit to ensure that all AP students have the benefit of a teacher deeply familiar with the changes. However, the College Board is considering what the audit requirements and process will be, given that some teachers have already incorporated many of these changes into their current courses.
A schedule of available professional development opportunities is included on the timeline. This plan includes a number of free online events for all teachers and administrators that will serve to acquaint them with the revised courses.
We suggest that principals and other administrators review the changes in the curricula and consider what supplemental professional development, if any, your teachers may need. Other supplemental professional development opportunities will be available to meet AP teachers’ specific needs.
Recently revised AP Vertical Teams Guides and workshops, designed with future AP courses in mind, are available to help you align curricula from middle school through the AP year, so that you can prepare your students for success long before they enroll in AP classes. Visit the College Board’s online store or the Professional Development area
of our website for details.
Counselors should continue to provide equitable access to AP by identifying all students who have the potential for success in AP courses. The AP Program continues to emphasize the importance of ensuring that a school’s AP classrooms reflect the demographics of the entire school, and we are grateful to counselors and AP Coordinators for their unique ability to help with this effort.
The AP Program is in the process of developing exams for AP French Language and Culture, AP German Language and Culture, and AP World History. During the next two years, as these courses are developed and finalized, the AP Program will provide additional detail about the proposed changes to the exams. Available information about the planned changes to the exams are available on the subject-specific pages.
